To find the right side of reason, to kill the three lies for one. I can see all the cold facts, I can see through your eyes. All this talk made no contact, no matter how hard we tried." (WARSAW) The history of Joy Division started out in Manchester in the fall 1976 when Bernard Sumner, Peter Hook and Terry Mason decided to start a band. They had known each other since childhood and spent the fall looking for a proper vocalist. Ian Curtis had met the trio at several concerts, they all shared a common interest in the new punk music. One day Ian saw their ad for a singer and phoned Bernard. As Deborah Curtis writes in her book: "When Ian rang Bernard Sumner's number, Bernard remembered bumping into Ian at local gigs and made a snap recruitment decision." Deborah Curtis does not provide a date for this event, but it must have been early in 1977. According Fernando Lopez-de-Victoria either Bernard or Peter have mentioned that they never had a name for the band in the early days. The name Stiff Kittens that Mark Johnson mentioned in his book is just a convinient way of refering to the early line-up of the band. Anyway, the band never played or recorded anything during this no-name period. Terry was a lousy drummer, so he decided to become manager instead! They brought in a new drummer, Tony Tabac, before the first gig and finally decided upon a group name: WARSAW. On May 29 1977 WARSAW made their live debut with a gig at The Electric Circus in Manchester. Tony Tabac stayed for five weeks and half a dozen gigs. New drummer: Steve Brotherdale. He came just in time to participate on the recording of "The Warsaw Demo" on July 18.th 1977. The 5 songs recorded were put on a demo-tape, only 5 tapes were made!! These tapes were later used as masters for bootlegs. But also Steve left after a short time. He even tried to persuade Ian to follow him and join the group Panik, but Ian's voice didn't fit Panik's melodies so Ian stayed with Warsaw. Once again Warsaw got a new drummer: Steve Morris. But now the line-up was complete: Ian, Peter, Bernard and Steve would later go on as JOY DIVISION... In December 1977 they recorded 4 songs that later would be released as "An Ideal For Living" (but under a different band-name). Due to a possible name-conflict with a London-group (see the FAQ) they decided to change the name again: So from January 1978 they were known as JOY DIVISION. The first gig as Joy Division was played at Pip's in Manchester on January 25 1978. At the "Stiff Records test / Chiswick Challenge" at Rafters in Manchester, April 14, the band met Rob Gretton. Rob liked their performance very much so he introduced the band to Tony Wilson, already a well-known presenter on Granada TV in England. On May 3.rd and 4.th Joy Division recorded material for what was expected to be their debut-album, by Mark Johnson named as "Joy Division". But John Anderson, one of the producers, put synths on the final mix in an attempt to make their raw sound more professional and advanced (compared to the common punk at the time). But the group were very unhappy when they heard the final mix, they disliked the synths and thought that it would harm their punk band reputation. The result: The album was never released! Soon after Rob Gretton took over as manager (Terry hadn't been a much better manager than drummer!). On June 9 they played together with several other bands on the opening of Tony Wilson's club "The Factory" in Manchester. Peter Saville designed the poster for the concert, an event that was named FAC 1!! Soon after Tony Wilson and Alan Erasmus started up the "Factory" label and in October they signed Joy Division. Now things started to turn their way. The music press started to take notice of them. On Sept 20 the band appeared on Granada TV on the program "Granada Reports", they performed "Shadowplay". On October 11 they went in Studio and recorded two songs for the compilation EP "A Factory Sample" which sold out its only pressing two months after its release in December 1978, giving Factory a net profit of 87 British Pounds!! On December 27 they played their first concert in London, at the Hope And Anchor in Islington. About 30 people came to see them, this was also the first concert the band charged money for entrance (the price was 60 p)!! On February 14 1979 the band was played on national radio in England, BBC's John Peel had done a recording session with the band in January. This certainly gave the band the publicity they needed, and on March 4 they played support for The Cure at the Marquee in London. In April 1979 they recorded "Unknown Pleasures" with producer Martin 'Zero' Hannett and the great sleeve-design was done by Peter Saville, they both continued to work with Joy Division and New Order on their later releases. In June they released "Unknown Pleasures", it received good critics in the music press and it sold nice, by June 1982: 100 000 copies. Their success made them stay on Factory, they played many gigs that summer and fall: On July 20 the band made a second appearance on Granada TV, on the program "What's on?", this time they performed "She's lost control". On August 31 they played at Electric Ballroom in London. 1200 spectators formed the biggest crowd ever at a Joy Division concert!! At Scala Cinema, in London, Factory organized an event they called FAC 9 on September 13. Part of this event was the showing of two Joy Division related films: "Joy Division" and "No City Fun". On September 15 Joy Division made their first and last major television appearance: "Something Else" on BBC 2. Ian Curtis made a great impression on the audience with his obsessive robotic movements during "Transmission" and "She's lost control". On October 27.th and 28.th 1979 they were videotaped during their concerts at the Apollo Theatre in Manchester. This tape was later included on the video "Here Are The Young Men". In November 1979 Warner Bros America offered the band 1 million dollars for distribution in America plus participation in a series of videos. But the band never answered the offer, they neither did when the offer was reproposed in May 1980 with more favourable terms for the band! On November 26.th they recorded their second Peel Session. One of the songs was "Love will tear us apart" which soon became the best known 'not-recorded' song in Britain. It was played at the John Peel Show December 10th, but until April 1980 it was only available live (at their concerts). In December and January Joy Division toured in Europe. Their famous Paradiso-gig was on January 11th 1980 and it was remarkable of two reasons: - It is their most booted concert. - They played 2 consecutive sets, a total of 17 songs lasting 70 minutes (due to missing support) !! In March 1980 the 7 inch "Licht Und Blindheit" came in a strictly limited edition on the french label Sordide Sentimental. Joy Division had recorded 2 songs specially for this single in England some months earlier, with producer Martin Hannett. In March they also recorded material for the new album "Closer" and for the single "Love will tear us apart". On May 2.nd Joy Division played High Hall, Birmingham University, this was going to be their last concert! Luckily that concert was taped and can be found on side C and D of the "Still" double album (FACT 40). This was the only time they played "Ceremony" and "Decades" live! On May 19.th Joy Division were supposed to leave for their American tour, it all looked so bright. But Ian couldn't handle the situation of growing success and personal crisis/illness, he ended his life on the 18th. "Instincts that can still betray us, a journey that leads to the sun, soulless and bent on destruction, a struggle between right and wrong. You take my place in the showdown, I'll observe with a pitiful eye, and humbly ask for forgiveness, a request well beyond you and I. Heart and soul, one will burn" (HEART AND SOUL) In the following months "Closer" climbed into the BBC top 10 and "Love will.." became a UK Top10-hit. By June 1982 the album had sold 250 000 copies. Bernard, Peter and Steve continued as New Order (but that's another story)...so let's end the Joy Division history with a quote from Chris Bohn (NME, 17 Oct 1981): "May 18 1980 didn't so much bring Joy Division's journey to the heart of darkness to an abrupt halt as...freeze it for all eternity at the brink of discovery. At least we can still travel that far with them." ########################################### # FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) # ########################################### In this section I will try to compile a list of questions (Q) that frequently appear on alt.music.alternative (a.m.a.), and give answers (A) to them. I will try to keep the list updated. Q: Hey, I just saw a STIFF KITTENS-LP in a record store downtown. Is it worth much ? A: No. As a matter of fact there is no Stiff Kittens LP! The name "Stiff Kittens" was suggested by Richard Boon for the first line-up of Joy Division, but according to both Deborah Curtis and Bernard Sumner (in interviews) the band disliked the name and never accepted it. This may seem to contradict much of the literature available on Joy Division, but Stiff Kittens is just a convenient way of refering to the early line-up. Anyway, this is more or less an academic question since they never played a gig or recorded anything before taking the name Warsaw. The LP you mention may have been a bootleg called "Stiff Kittens - Try To Cure Yourself". But that bootleg is from a Joy Division concert in 1979, so the title is misleading! ++++++ Q: What's the deal with "The Kill" from the Warsaw Demo and "The Kill" on "Still", they sound very different to me ? A: You're right, we're talking about two completely different songs here. They don't have anything in common, not even the lyrics, except for their titles of course :-) Joy Division simply wrote a new song with the same title, and if you check the Trivia section you'll see that it was very common for Joy Division and Warsaw to swap titles between songs or rename them. ++++++ Q: Bernard must be a weird fellow, he's got more names than there are Joy Division albums! How many names did he use and where did he get them ? A: Actually, Bernard's true surname is Sumner. But he also used Dicken which was his surname after his mum remarried. Albrecht was the name of a printing machine (or something along those lines) he used to use in his job before Joy Division got going, and Bernard started to use that name probably 'cos it tied in with the old Germanic overtones of their early stuff. Finally, Bernard also used the surname Rubble which was a nickname. He was referred to as Barney Rubble in a very early gig review in Sounds. ++++++ Q: Where did they get the name Warsaw from ? A: From the song "Warszawa" off David Bowie's "Low" album which was released early in 1977. ++++++ Q: Why did they change the name to Joy Division ? A: Because they were afraid of being mistaken for a London- based punk/metal-group called Warsaw Pakt, which had released an album called "Needle Time" in November 1977. At that time Warsaw had still not released anything officially so they felt that they would come out as losers in a name-conflict. ++++++ Q: So where did they dig up the name "Joy Division" and what does it mean ? A: They chose the name "Joy Division" from a lurid novel of sado- masochism in German concentration camps during 2 WW. The novel entitled "The House Of Dolls" was written by Karol Cetinsky. The "joy divisions" refers to the line of huts in which the young deported women were forced to prostitute themselves to nazi officers on leave. ++++++ Q: I keep hearing that Joy Division has nazi-sympathies, is this true? A: This thread pop up on Usenet every now and then, and to give you the answer first: NO!!! This thread, however, did not start on Usenet or Internet. It started in the british music press more than 15 years ago, and since Joy Division gave very few interviews the rumours were allowed to grow in the press. Here's a few points to clear up things: > The version of "At a later date" that appear on the "Short Circuit" compilation opens with Bernard shouting "You all forgot Rudolf Hess!". At that time Rudolf Hess, 83 years old, had been imprisoned at the Spandau prison in East Berlin for more than 30 years. You don't have to be a nazi to feel sympathy for a sick old man that was heavily guarded by some 100 KGB soldiers. > According to Fernando Lopez-de-Victoria: Bernard (and perhaps Ian in some obscure interview) has noted that they like the regalia and art (?) of the Nazi's, but in no way liked their philosophy. This can be seen in some of their artwork, for example: > Bernard made the design for "An Ideal For Living", it included a drawing of a Hitler-jugend-look-alike drummer boy. But on the same fold-out sleeve there's a famous picture from the Warsaw ghetto during 2WW: A young Jewish boy standing with his hands up in the air being guarded by a nazi storm-trooper. Now, is that good nazi propaganda ? > The name Joy Division was associated with nazism, journalists didn't like it (the same thing happened with New Order). As you can read somewhere else in this FAQ "Joy Division" really has a connection to nazism: It was chosen from a book that describes the horrors in a nazi camp during 2WW, not the prosperous future... "Through the wire-screen the eyes, of those standing outside, looked in at her, as into the cage of some rare creature in a zoo. In the hand of one of the assistants she saw the same instrument which they had, that morning, inserted deep into her body. She shuddered instinctively. No life at all in the House of Dolls. No love lost." This verse from Cetinsky's "The House Of Dolls" was included on the version of "No love lost" from recording session (2). The weird thing is that many other punk-bands used much more direct nazi symbolism in their relation with the press, and still got away with it!! Though the press never got to interview Joy Division about this topic they could have checked Joy Division's lyrics. If they had they wouldn't have found a shred of nazi propaganda, on the contrary! Take for example "They walked in line": "All dressed in uniforms so fine, they drank and killed to pass the time. Wearing the shame of all their crimes, with measured steps, they walked in line They carried pictures of their wives and number tags to prove their lives, and made it through the whole machine with dirty hearts and hands washed clean." And, to really tear down the nazi rumour: Joy Division have participated in a Rock Against Racism benefit concert (at Kelly's in Manchester 12 October 1978) and an Amnesty International benefit concert (at Eric's in Liverpool 3 May 1979). To summarize: I can't find any evidence that JD has shown any sympathy with fascism/nazism, only the contrary. ++++++ Q: How, when and why did Ian Curtis die ? A: According to Deborah Curtis' book Ian hung himself late Saturday evening, probably past midnight, in the kitchen of their Macclesfield home at 77 Barton Street. He did NOT use an ice block like some people want to believe, he just tied a rope to the clothes rack. He was found by Deborah around 12 the next day, kneeling on the kitchen floor with the rope around his neck. I don't think anyone knows exactly why, it's really non of our business anyway, but here's a few points to reflect over: > Deborah Curtis believes Ian had planned this for some time, she seem to find evidence for this in everything from the lyrics on "Closer" to Ian's behavior. Her book seems very biased against Ian so I'm not sure how much faith to put in her conclusion. > Let's get one thing straight: Ian did not die as some sort of a martyr for the rest of mankind, as a music-journalist in England wrote a few months later. Whatever the reason was, Ian did it for himself. > Ian was becoming more and more epileptic, the band had been playing very intensively the last 6 months and done radio-, TV- and recording-sessions. The stress started to show on Ian and during the spring 1980 he several times collapsed on stage. The band had cancelled many gigs in April and May due to Ian's health and the prospects of a heavy tour in the US may have scared Ian quite a bit. > Deborah Curtis wanted to devorce Ian due to an affair he had, Deborah Woodruffe was a childhood friend of Ian and had been married to him since August 23 1975. Together they had a daughter named Natalie (born on April 16 1979). > Many people say that Ian was bound to kill himself because of all the depressing lyrics he wrote. Well, according to Mark Johnson: "Close friends of Ian describe him as a happy guy, a bit shy maybe - but certainly not depressive." > No matter who writes the final biography on Ian the real reason will always remain hidden. Ian had a very complex personality and nobody can ever claim to know exactly what he thought and what triggered the suicide. If you have any interest in details, Ian was cremated on May 23, he was born July 15 1956 (so he didn't make it to 24), the last movie he saw was "Stroszek" by German director Werner Herzog and the turntable with Iggy Pop's "The Idiot" was still turning when Deborah Curtis found Ian dead. ++++++ Q: This is getting depressing, let's talk about something else. I've got the first New Order single and I'm positive that it's Ian's voice I hear on "In a lonely place". What's the deal ? A: Ian did write the lyrics for "In a lonely place", in fact it's the LAST song he wrote. But the song only exist on rehearsal demos with Ian's vocal, which is how New Order managed to recover the lyrics when they recorded it. There exists two version of the song, Ian sings on neither: > One was recorded at Eastern Artists Recording Studio in East Orange, New Jersey, 22-23 September 1980. This was the first recording Peter, Bernard and Steve did without Ian. The song appeared on the New Order FAC 33 single "Ceremony" in January 1981. Both as 7" and 12". > The other version was recorded at Strawberry Studios, Stockport in Cheshire (10 miles south of Manchester), December 1980. By then Gillian Gilbert had joined New Order. This version appeared on a 12" single called "Ceremony" that came as FAC 33/12 in July 1981. The reason why people think Ian sings on the September 1980- version of the song may be that at the time the left-overs from Joy Division had not yet decided which one of them was best suited to do the vocals...the solution was that Steve did the vocals on this first recording session (but not on later New Order releases). His voice is very different from Bernard's and can be confused with Ian's. ++++++ Q: "Ceremony" is supposed to be a Joy Division song, but I have a hard time finding it. Where should I look ? A: If you want a studio-recording you gotta go for the "Ceremony" single I mentioned above...but that is with New Order. You see, Joy Division never recorded "Ceremony". In fact they only played it live once, at their very last concert: In Birmingham, May 2 1980. Luckily that concert was taped and was included on "Still" :-) ++++++ Q: Did Martin Hannett create the Joy Division sound ? A: It's been widely accepted that Martin "Zero" Hannett, who produced almost everything Joy Division recorded, holds much of the responsibility for the "Joy Division sound". But to credit him for all of it would probably be to underestimate the band, quoting Peter Hook from an interview in Charles Neal's Tape Delay: "I mean Martin did teach us a lot, he taught us to look at music and our songs and our sounds in a totally different way. We had a very narrow vision of them, we'd just turn our amps on and that was it. When we got in the studio we couldn't understand why the monitors didn't sound like our amps. He tought us to make allowances for certain things like that. [...] He didn't do the whole thing on his own. People used to suggest things, not just the group, Rob and even Chris Nagle. It's really funny how people seem to think in the early days it was all Martin, but it never was just Martin. It's always been a greater input than just him" That this is so should be evident from the First Peel Session that was recorded without Martin in the studio, but except for the Peel sessions Martin produced everything after 1978. He stayed with the band after Ian's death and produced several of the New Order albums until he split company with the band in the mid 80s. Martin Hannett passed away on April 2nd 1991, at the age of 41, Factory quickly compiled some of his work and released the album "Martin" (FACT 325) as a memorial in August that year. In addition to Joy Division and New Order Martin also produced material for artists like Buzzcocks, U2, Happy Mondays, A Certain Ratio, OMD and Durutti Column. ++++++ Q: "Still" sucks! The sound is way too poor, how could Factory relase this piece of crap ? To rip off fans ?? A: You are of course entitled to have your own opinions, but lets not waste further bandwidth. Instead I'll give you a few things to reflect over: > Of course Factory wanted to make money on their artists, I mean who wouldn't ? But... > ...Factory didn't use the opportunity they had to flood the market with new Joy Division products, reissues and compilations. In fact, except for "Still", the fans had to wait 8 years from Ian's death before the official Joy Division compilation "Substance" arrived. I wouldn't call that ripping off the fans. > The band did not have a major label behind them, so the sound at their shows might not have been exemplary to allow a nice soundboard recording. The worse the venue, the worse the soundboard recording because it has to be mixed so that it sounds good through the speakers, which may not create a good tonal balance at the soundboard. > Even though the sound-quality on "Still" is worse than on their studio-recordings it still is very valuable to fans, because: a) "Ceremony" does not appear on any other Joy Division record. It was played live for the first (& last) time at the University in Birmingham, May 2 1980. It is that version you will find on "Still". b) The "Still"-version of "The kill" has not been included on any of their other official releases, and I haven't found it on any bootleg so far. As you can read above this version is totally different from "The kill" on "The Warsaw Demo", in fact it's a different song!! c) The version of "Means to an end" that appear on "Still", a live-version that is, is much more energic/angry than the version on "Closer". And IMHO it's the best version I've heard of that song. Taking these points into consideration I would certainly disagree with your opinion of "Still" :-) ++++++ Q: Could you supply a run-down on the equipment used by Joy Division, especially the keyboards used on "Love Will Tear Us Apart"? A: The synthesiser effects on "Love Will Tear Us Apart" were achieved on the ARP Omni played through the MXR Graphic, the Chorus Flanger and the Melos Echo Unit. Stephen Morris had a Black Rodgers concert drum kit with 22-inch bass drum, 14-inch Gretsch snare drum, 12-, 13-, 14- and 15-inch hanging concert tom-toms, 15-inch Super Zyn hi-hats 20-inch Earth ride and crash ride cymbals. 18- and 14-inch Zildjan crash cymbals, a Simmonds twin-channel drum synthesiser, a Synare three-drum synthesiser, a Musicaid Claptrap and a Boss drum machine Peter Hooke played a Yamaha RB1200 bass and a Shergold Marathon six-string bass, with a Chorus pedal and either (1) a Hiwatt Custom 100-watt amp through a Vox Foundation bass cabinet with 2x18-inch Goodmans 100-watt speakers or (2) an Alembic pre-amp with a Crown Ameron DC300A amp and a Marshall bass cabinet with 4x15-inch Gauss 400-watt speakers. Bernard Dicken played a Gibson SG Standard and a Shergold Masquerader with a Vox UD 30 amp and a Vox Cabinet with 2x12-inch Marshall speakers, and has a Powertran Transcedent 2000 synthesiser and an ARP Omni 2 synthesiser. Effects and accessories used are: A Melos echo unit, an MXR Graphic, a Chorus Flanger and an Altair PW-5 Power Attenuator. Ian Curtis played Vox Phantom and Vox Teardrop guitars with a Vox UD 30 amp and Vox cabinet with 2x12-inch Marshall speakers. ++++++ Q: Is there a Joy Division mailing-list? A: Yes, the Atmosphere list! To subsribe do the following: > send an e-mail to atmosphere-request@niagara.edu > include the text "subscribe" in the subject-line The old Ceremony mailinglist (ceremony-request@niagara.edu) is now dedicated to New Order. There is also a newsgroup dedicated to Joy Division, it's naturally called alt.music.joydivision. If you have more questions about this you should e-mail Fernando Lopez-de-Victoria at fl12@cornell.edu. ++++++ Q: Are we through already, was that the entire FAQ-list ?!!?? A: Yup, but I can make it longer if you've got the questions :-) ++++++ ########################################### # Trivia (or: A few less known facts) # ########################################### ----> All the serials of Joy Division's full length Factory releases divide by 5: FAC 10, FAC 25, FAC 40 and FAC 250 (which gives another aspect to the band's name). ----> All the Factory serials that divides by 25, except for one, are either Joy Division or New Order. ----> 23 is also an important number, like fans of William S. This could be a reference to the grandfather of goth, Isidore Ducasse (aka le Comte de Lautreamont) and his classic "Les Chants de Maldoror". Maldoror was fond of saying (in French, of course) "I still exist". The thought that Ian had "Maldoror" is quite believable. ----> The title of the song "Love Will Tear Us Apart" is more than likely a response/parody of the Captain and Tennile's "Love Will Keep Us Together". "Love Will Tear Us Apart" was written after Tony Wilson had given Ian a copy of Frank Sinatra's "Twenty Greatest Hits" to listen too!!! ----> "Transmission" is named after a radio show on the local Manchester station Picadilly Radio. ----> Speaking of "Transmission": The first verse is from "The Book Of Thoth" by Alistair Crowley. The song "Incubation" has also been titled "Cross of iron" on several occasions, in fact so often that bootlegs often call it "Incubation (Cross of Iron)" or just "Cross of Iron". As if this wasn't enough, the songs "A means to an end" and "Incubation" also swapped titles at one point!! ----> The song "All of this for you" is sometimes called "The Drawback" while the untitled track on the "Komakino"-flexi is "As you said" (but on some bootlegs it's called "Incubation II"!!). ----> While we're at it: During the Piccadilly Radio Session on June 4 1979 they recorded a song named "Chance". Later they rewrote a few lines and retitled it "Atmosphere". This habit of swapping/changing titles continued with New Order. ----> Though Joy Division only made rehearsal demos of "Ceremony" and "In a lonely place" they both exist as studio-recordings, but with New Order. Both can be found on the first New Order single, "Ceremony" (FAC 33), released in January 1981. ----> Swans do THREE versions of "Love will tear us apart". The acoustic guitar "Red" version sung by Michael Gira, the keyboard "Black" version sung by Jarboe and the CD-version have an extra acoustic version of the track done by Gira. ----> The Fall song "Various Times", B-side to "It's the New Thing" released late in 1978, contains what is likely a direct reference to Ian: [...] Present : I don't like them said Ian in his black-out threats I think I'll drop out Become a no-man And live my rules But I'm the sort that gets out of the bath with a dirty face Not too far-fetched since Warsaw and the Fall shared rehearsal space. Words used with kind permission by Jonathan Kandell (jkandell@ccit.arizona.edu) from his The FALL Lyrics Parade ----> Vini Reilly, of the Durutti Column, wrote two songs about Ian Curtis: o "Sleep Will Come" (on the "Crepuscule From Brussels With Love compilation") o "The Missing Boy" (on the FACT 44 LC album) ----> A 12" single released on Temple records (TOPY 058T) in 1990 by Psychic TV, entitled "I.C. Water", was dedicated by Genesis P. Orridge to Ian Curtis. The cover is a blue-and-grey picture of Ian Curtis. ----> In an interview Genesis P.Orridge said that Ian Curtis had called him two days before he died, yet he doesn't say explicitly whether the suicide was evoked or not, and he goes on saying his death made him cry more than any other because Ian Curtis had given everything he had. ----> On the bootleg "Girls Don't Cry", recorded during a Cure concert on May 24 1980, Robert Smith introduces the song "Primary" by saying: "This song is dedicated...to the memory of Ian Curtis". Robert Smith said, at that time, that Ian's suicide prevented his own. ----> In the "NewOrderStory" video U2-singer Bono makes an emotional comment on Ian Curtis and Joy Division: "[...] Anyway, we loved the man and we loved the band, they were an original of the species that later became Goth." ----> In the same video Bernard Sumner can be seen saying: "I don't mind talking about Joy Division to anyone - although I find the albums a bit heavy to listen to these days" ----> In another interview the same Bono was quoted to say "I always sort of saw Ian Curtis as a kind of Roy Orbison of our generation. I know that sounds pretty vomity, but, you know, even through all that gothic thing, I've always liked people to take themselves painfully seriously." ----> According to an interview with the legendary photographer Anton Corbijn in the magazine Q100 in January 1995: "It was Joy Division that forced the inevitable exodus. In the end I moved because of them. I loved their music so much I felt I had to be around them. In England, a month later, he rang the band's management and, astonishingly, was granted the session which produced the eternal image in the tube corridor, Ian Curtis framed in a ghostly neon. No-one wanted to publish it - until he died, then it was obviously prophetic. [...] He won't divulge the exact tube station used for his famous Joy Division picture in case it's defaced with graffiti." ----> The "hot" Chicago record store during the late 1970's and into the mid-1980's, Wax Trax (originally located on North Lincoln Avenue), for years kept a neon Joy Division sign lit up behind their counter. It was made in anticipation of Joy Division's first US tour, which, as we sadly know, never came about. Wax Trax heavily promoted JD/NO during their early years and sold JD/NO posters, rare records, books, NO concert tickets for their 1983 tour, etc. Wax Trax also formed the label Wax Trax! Records promoting local artists like Ministry and Revolting Cocks. "This is the hour when the mysteries emerge, a strangeness so hard to reflect. A moment so moving, goes straight to your heart, the vision has never been met. The attraction is held like a weight deep inside, something I'll never forget. The pattern is set, her reaction will start, complete but rejected too soon. Looking ahead in the grip of each fear, recalls the life that we knew. The shadows that stood by the side of the road, always reminds me of you." (KOMAKINO) ########################################### # The Joy Division Poll # ########################################### On May 12 1995 a survey (a Netizen's poll if you like) was posted on several Usenet newsgroups asking people to send their 3 favorite Joy Division melodies and one favorite album. The original survey ended on May 18 1995 (of obvious reasons) and the result looked like this, after 33 persons had voted: -- TOP 10 Songs ------- -- # Votes-- 1. Atmosphere 13 2. Love will tear us apart 7 3. Dead souls 6 3. Isolation 6 3. Twenty four hours 6 6. Decades 5 6. New dawn fades 5 6. No love lost 5 6. She's lost control 5 10. Shadowplay 4 10. The eternal 4 10. Transmission 4 -- TOP 3 Albums ------- -- # Votes-- 1. Closer 14 2. Unknown Pleasures 11 3. Substance 5 However, people continued to send votes even after the survey ended so the poll continued until it finally closed more than a year later. By June 2 1996 a total of 147 persons had participated, resulting in the following Top 10 songs and Top 3 albums: -- TOP 10 Songs ------- -- # Votes-- 1. Atmosphere 39 1. New dawn fades 39 3. Love will tear us apart 33 4. Decades 32 5. Twenty four hours / 24 hours 28 6. Dead souls 24 7. She's lost control 21 8. Isolation 19 9. Disorder 15 9. Shadowplay 15 9. Transmission 15 -- TOP 3 Albums ------- -- # Votes-- 1. Closer 63 2. Unknown Pleasures 43 3. Substance 16 Analyzing the results: * In the song ranking the huge gap between "Atmosphere" and the others, from the May 18, poll have disappeared. This either imply that the huge fraction of votes for "Atmosphere" in the May 18 poll was a statistical fluctuation or that there is a difference in view about "Atmosphere" between the people participating in the May 18 poll and those in the later part. From what people wrote, when voting, it seems likely that the fraction of 'longtime' fans was much larger in the May 18 poll than in the full poll. Thus the two results may indicate that older fans appreciate "Atmosphere" somewhat higher than new. But the trend that many songs share the votes continue, giving rise to the same conclusion as after the May 18 poll: Joy Division is not a 'one hit wonder' but have a large selection of songs of a quality so high that fans cannot unite about only a few. * On the album ranking "Closer" ended up as the most popular with almost 43% of the votes while "Unknown Pleasures" only got 29% This is a larger difference than in the May 18 poll but it can be explained by noting that in the May 18 poll mainly longtime fans participated while in the full poll also many new fans voted. Longtime fans will usually have heard both "Closer" and "Unknown Pleasures" while it seems like "Closer" is the album new fans start out with, leaving "Unknown Pleasures" for later. For more details and a full listing of the results: http://www.fys.uio.no/~bor/musikk/joydiv/poll.html Finally, one should only take this poll and the results as an indication, not a rule, of which Joy Division albums and songs that are most popular. Specifically: The poll did not intend to find the best songs or albums and it was not checked for any fake email addresses - only that a given address had not voted before. ########################################### # Official releases # ########################################### ---------------------------------------------------------------------- AN IDEAL FOR LIVING (7") PSS139 Enigma 1978 (12") ANON1 Anonymous Records 1978 Tracks: 1. Warsaw 3. Leaders of men 2. No love lost 4. Failures ** Recorded session (2). During June 1978 the band self-issued the 7" on their own Enigma label (must not be confused with the US Enigma that has released stuff by bands like Devo and Flaming Lips). The 7" came with a special folding sleeve which turns into a 14" X 14" full colour/ black-white poster. The poster was designed by Bernard. There are some disagreement between Mark Johnson's book and sources that have information directly from the band-members concerning the 7". Mark Johnson writes that the 7" was issued in 5000 copies (which certainly sounds pretty much) and that the sound quality was poor. But both Bernard (in an interview with Martyn Kerluk in 1981) and Peter (in a more recent interview with Fernando Lopez-de-Victoria) says that they made "a thousand or so" copies of the 7". And according to Martyn Kerluk the sound quality of the 7" is pretty good! So it seems more likely that only 1000 copies were made of the 7", and that the sound quality is good. After the release of the 7" they discovered that there already was another label called Enigma, so they changed name of their own label to Anonymous Records. The 12" was released in 1200 copies in October 1978 (according to Mark Johnson, while Deborah Curtis claim September 1978) on Anonymous. The sound quality is excellent. Any 12" without scaffolds on the cover is a bootleg. This will hopefully prevent people from paying too much for a bootleg. There is a 12", without scaffolds on the cover, which is said to be a "Limited edition - collectors item": It's just a bluff. ** ---------------------------------------------------------------------- UNKNOWN PLEASURES (LP) FACT 10 Factory 1979 (Europe) FACTUS 1 Factory 1980 (US) FACOZ 1003 Gap Records 1981 (Australia) ZONA 7 Zona Records 1992 (Lithuania) (CD) FACD 10 Factory 1990 (UK) (MC) FACT 10C Factory 1987 (UK) FACTUS 1C Rough Trade 1987 (US) Tracks: - INSIDE- 1. Peter Hook stated that "Factory is doomed to remain small...it's the sort of label that gets its acknowledgement 10 years after". It was probably meant to be a summary of their first decade, but like we all know: The label went bankrupt in 1992, so this box is more or less the 'heritage' from Factory. The box consists of 4 LP's or 4 CD's and a 36 page colour booklet, the individual albums in the box was also sold separately. Full title "Palatine - The Factory Story/1979-1990". The individual parts of the box are: "Tears In Their Eyes" (FACT 314) "Life's A Beach" (FACT 324) "The Beat Groups" (FACT 334) "Selling Out" (FACT 344) where each volume covers a certain period of the labels history. Released in November 1991. Joy Division appears on three of the albums (FACT 324 as the only exception), for more info look up the other FACT entries. ** ---------------------------------------------------------------------- NEW ORDER STORY (video) 087 134-3 London Records 1993 Tracks: 1. Track 1 was recorded live during the BBC program "Something Else" September 15 1979, track 2 is the same video as on "Here Are The Young Men" and track 21 (which is partly destroyed by the credit listing at the end of the video) is the famous Anton Corbijn production from 1988. The video was written and produced by JD-connaisseur Paul Morley and lasts 140 minutes. It features interviews with the band members, Tony Wilson, Rob Gretton, Bono, Neil Tennant, Quincy Jones and others. As part of the New Order Story many topics of this video centers around Joy Division and Ian Curtis, these two statements should give some of us something to reflect over: "...Anyway, we loved the man [Ian Curtis] and we loved the band [Joy Division], they were an original of the species that later became Goth." -- Bono "I don't mind talking about Joy Division to anyone - although I find the albums a bit heavy to listen to these days." -- Bernard Sumner ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ########################################### # Their songs # ########################################### 1. The gig was put on by a few members of Section 25 (this was before Section 25 became known). 068. 28 Jul 1979: The Mayflower Club, Manchester Notes: The Funhouse Festival "Stuff the Superstars Special" featured headliners The Fall and Joy Division. Several other bands played as well. 069. 02 Aug 1979: YMCA, Tottenham Court Road, London Notes: This was the first of the 4 nights alternative rock festival at the Prince of Wales Conference Centre in London, besides Joy Division also Teardrop Explodes and Echo And The Bunnymen played. Adrian Thrills was ecstatic over Joy Division in his NME [11 Aug 1979] review: "If I had a flair for understatement, I could say that Joy Division were good too. The truth is they were phenomenal - the most physical hard rock group I've seen since Gang Of Four. This Manchester band have been allowed to grow at their own pace, uncramped by commercial pressures. The result is that they've created a totally distinctive, cohesive sound over the last two years...They have the spirit and the feeling." 070. 08 Aug 1979: Romulus Club, Birmingham Notes: JD supported Dexy's Midnight Runners 071. 11 Aug 1979: Eric's, Liverpool Notes: Joy Division played two shows this Saturday, a matinee at 5 PM for those under 18 (a tradition at Eric's) and an evening performance. "Novelty" was not only debuted here but may have been written that very day! 072. 13 Aug 1979: Nashville Rooms, London Notes: Orchestral Manouvres in the Dark and A Certain Ratio supports Joy Division on a rather unsuccessful night. The band even wind up in a car crash when driving back to Manchester...but they all get away without injuries. 073. 22 Aug 1979: Youth Centre, Walthamstow, London Notes: Deborah Curtis list August 24 as the date while Mark Johnson writes Wednesday August 22. 074. 27 Aug 1979: Leigh Pop Festival Notes: Arranged by Factory as FAC 15, bands playing included Orchestral Manouvres in the Dark, A Certain Ratio, Teardrop Explodes, Echo And The Bunnymen and Joy Division. 075. 31 Aug 1979: The Electric Ballroom, London Notes: Joy Division headlined their own show and played infront of 1200 people, their largest audience, they were supported by A Certain Ratio and Scritti Politti. 076. 08 Sep 1979: Futurama One, Queen's Hall, Leeds Notes: Joy Division appeared on the opening day of John Keenan's "The World's First Science Fiction Music Festival" (better known as "Futurama" or in 1979 "Futurama '79"). They played as 13th among 17 bands, including Cabaret Voltaire, Orchestral Manouvres in the Dark, Public Image Limited and A Certain Ratio. NME's Andy Gill reported: "Unquestionably, the real stars of the night were Joy Division." 15 Sep 1979: "Transmission" and "She's lost control" broadcast on BBC 2's "Something Else" 077. 22 Sep 1979: Nashville Rooms, London 078. 28 Sep 1979: The Factory I, Manchester Notes: This was the group's final gig at the Russel Club location before it shut down for the first time. The gig was opened by Teardrop Explodes. Before Joy Division entered the stage Ian had a seizure and was badly shaken, but he wouldn't give up the gig and went on stage with the rest of the band and gave an excellent performance! The gig was, however, marred by some violence when Peter jumped off the stage with his bass, during the encore, in pursuit of one of 4 or 5 bullies who were hassling the audience. The amplified sound of Peter's bass hitting one of the tormentors blasted through The Factory! The club was jammed with 800 people! 079. 02 Oct 1979: Mountford Hall, Liverpool Notes: This was the opening gig of the 24 date Buzzcocks tour in Britain which Joy Division played support to. Like several other nights Joy Division completely blew Buzzcocks off stage. 080. 03 Oct 1979: Leeds University Notes: This gig was really crazy; 20-30 people fainted as they were crushed against the stage to see Joy Division and Buzzcocks. Des Moines [NME] wrote: "It is Ian who symbolises Joy Division...the 'gothic dance music' he orchestrates is well understood by those who recognize they're New Wave frontiersmen" 081. 04 Oct 1979: City Hall, Newcastle 082. 05 Oct 1979: Apollo, Glasgow, Scotland 083. 06 Oct 1979: Odeon, Edinburgh, Scotland 084. 07 Oct 1979: Capitol, Aberdeen, Scotland 085. 08 Oct 1979: Caird Hall, Dundee, Scotland 086. 16 Oct 1979: Plan K, Brussels, Belgium Notes: Joy Division had a few days off from the Buzzcocks tour to play with Cabaret Voltaire at Plan K. However the main act was American author William S Burroughs whom Ian was a huge fan of. However, Burroughs probably was tired and bored with the concerts and when Ian went up to talk with him the author told Ian to get lost. Ian got lost immediately, not a little hurt by the rebuff. 087. 19 Oct 1979: Bangor University 088. 20 Oct 1979: Loughborough University 089. 21 Oct 1979: Top Rank, Sheffield 090. 22 Oct 1979: Assembly Rooms, Derby 091. 23 Oct 1979: King George's Hall, Blackburn 092. 24 Oct 1979: The Odeon, Birmingham 093. 25 Oct 1979: St.George's Hall, Bradford 094. 26 Oct 1979: Electric Ballroom, London Notes: This was the second time Joy Division stepped off the Buzzcocks tour to play a gig on their own. A Certain Ratio played support for Joy Division. 095. 27 Oct 1979: Apollo Theatre, Manchester Notes: Due to strict time schedule on the Buzzcocks tour Joy Division were only allowed to play for 32 minutes with no encore...to the great disappointment of the audience which loudly started booing. Both this night and the following were videotaped by Richard Boon, part of the tape is featured on the "Here Are The Young Men" video (FAC 37). 096. 28 Oct 1979: Apollo Theatre, Manchester Notes: The group didn't feel like repeating last nights reaction from the audience so they played for almost one hour. 097. 29 Oct 1979: De Montfort Hall, Leicester 098. 30 Oct 1979: New Theatre, Oxford 099. 01 Nov 1979: Civic Hall, Guildford 100. 02 Nov 1979: Winter Gardens, Bournemouth 03 Nov 1979: Sofia Gardens, Cardiff Notes: This date is listed in Deborah Curtis' book but not in Mark Johnson's or in the Italian "From The Centre Of The City" book 101. 04 Nov 1979: Colston Hall, Bristol 102. 05 Nov 1979: Pavilion, Hemel Hempstead 103. 07 Nov 1979: Pavilion, West Runton 104. 09 Nov 1979: The Rainbow Theatre, London Notes: This night the sound quality was extremely poor while Joy Division played but improved dramatically after Buzzcocks started their set! 105. 10 Nov 1979: Rainbow Theatre, London Notes: This was the final date of the Buzzcocks tour and this time the sound quality was "immaculately sharp". 106. 08 Dec 1979: Eric's, Liverpool Notes: Yet another two show date at Eric's this time with Section 25 as support. 107. 18 Dec 1979: Les Bains Douche, Paris Notes: This gig was partially broadcasted live on French radio. 108. 31 Dec 1979: warehouse above Woolworth's, Oldham Street, Manchester Notes: Joy Division played at a Factory arranged New Year's Eve Party above a shop in Manchester's Piccadilly Gardens. About 100 invited attended and the band played for about half an hour. 109. 11 Jan 1980: Paradiso Club, Amsterdam, The Netherlands Notes: The local support didn't want to play so Joy Division stood in for them! That's why they played two completely different sets for the price of one, totally 17 songs (including 2 encores) and more than one hour! This concert is one of the most heavily booted Joy Division concerts. 110. 12 Jan 1980: Paard Van Troje, The Hague, The Netherlands Notes: Paard Van Troje = The Trojan Horse 111. 13 Jan 1980: Doornroosje, Nijmegen, The Netherlands 112. 14 Jan 1980: King Kong, Antwerpen, Belgium Notes: This concert was badly advertised so very few people showed up for the event. 113. 15 Jan 1980: The Basement, Cologne, Germany Notes: This concert more than made up for the disaster in Antwerpen. The Basement was situated in the basement of an old church. The atmosphere was outstanding, the audience made up of crowds of German punks who were very enthusiastic about the band's music, and the sound was greatly enhanced by the odd acoustics of the arched and vaulted crypt. 114. 16 Jan 1980: Lantaren, Rotterdam, The Netherlands 115. 17 Jan 1980: Plan K, Brussels, Belgium 116. 18 Jan 1980: Effenaar, Eindhoven, The Netherlands 117. 19 Jan 1980: Club Vera, Groningen, The Netherlands 118. 21 Jan 1980: Kant Kino, Berlin, Germany Notes: Bernard noted in May 1981 that "...the atmosphere...strange...it was quite a lot like Manchester...Berlin...it had a cold atmosphere... Anonymous...an evil atmosphere. You could feel the evil...you could feel it from the war." Joy Division probably named "Komakino" after this venue! 119. 07 Feb 1980: The Factory II (New Osbourne Club), Manchester Notes: Joy Division headlined this benefit concert to the Manchester magazine City Fun. It was arranged by Factory so both Section 25 and A Certain Ratio appeared. But the concert was a failure: Artistically because both Section 25 and A Certain Ratio sounded more and more like Joy Division, and economically because Iggy Pop played at Manchester's Apollo Theatre the same night. 120. 08 Feb 1980: University Of London Union Notes: Joy Division headlined, supporting acts were Section 25, A Certain Ratio and Killing Joke! The place was absolutely jammed due to the high popularity of all the bands, and Paul Morley wrote [NME, 16 Feb 1980]: "The full new introduction of synthesizers has not damaged the coherence and balance of the music in any way, it simply increases the amount of mood, atmosphere, ephemeral terror Joy Division are capable of." 121. 20 Feb 1980: Town Hall, High Wycombe Notes: Killing Joke and A Certain Ratio played support. 122. 28 Feb 1980: The Warehouse, Preston Notes: Ian, most unusually, was very talkative on stage - primarily to fill in the time while order was restored by the roadies (they had some PA problems due to interference with the beer pump!!). Despite the problems, or because of them, the tape of this concert is probably one of the most interesting bootlegs (most of it appeared on the TESTAMENT bootleg in 1991). 123. 29 Feb 1980: The Lyceum, London Notes: A prestigious concert with Killing Joke and Joy Division co-headlining, and Section 25 and A Certain Ratio playing support. 124. 05 Mar 1980: Trinity Hall, Bristol 125. 02 Apr 1980: The Moonlight Club, West Hampstead, London Notes: This was the first gig of 4 in 3 days!! Section 25 played support, but Joy Division didn't feel the inspiration and played a poor set. 126. 03 Apr 1980: The Moonlight Club, West Hampstead, London Notes: The second night they played a lot better, and Martin Townsend wrote: "This is a difficult period for Joy Division; they can ignore or encourage their popularity, and disappear both ways." 127. 04 Apr 1980: Rainbow Theatre, London Notes: The Stranglers were holding a benefit concert for their lead singer Hugh Cornwell who was in Pentonville Prison for drug possession. Joy Division was invited because they figured Joy Division would pull more people to the concert. Unfortunately there were strobe lights that night and during the final song Ian had an epileptic seizure and fell violently back into the drum kit. The audience, who didn't understand the situation, thought this was a great finale for the show. After being carried off stage Ian recovered rapidly, they had one more gig to play! 128. 04 Apr 1980: The Moonlight Club, West Hampstead, London Notes: Not many people knew Joy Division would play here, it was the Rainbow Theatre concert that was advertised. As soon as the gig at Rainbow was over Joy Division left their equipment there and hurried by car to The Moonlight Club. Here they entered the stage as the last band. Joy Division had played two concerts in one day several times before so they figured they could do it again, but Ian who had been increasingly ill the last couple of months was in no condition for one more performance. Neil Norman wrote this for NME: "Within 8 minutes of the end of [Vini Reilly's] set the magnificent Joy Division took the stage and played with a power and passion that made it difficult to believe they were literally within an hour or so of playing at the Rainbow. The strain was most noticable in vocalist Ian Curtis who was helped off stage after their fifth number, although until then his performance had been as darkly effective as ever...Unlike The Fall, who make me want to go out and kick a cat, Joy Division convince me I could spit in the face of God." 129. 05 Apr 1980: Malvern Winter Gardens Notes: Joy Division finished a glowing set at Malvern with an encore jam with the support group Section 25. 130. 08 Apr 1980: Derby Hall, Bury Notes: A very chaotic gig! Due to Ian's health he only stayed on stage for a short while, instead Joy Division and supporting group, Section 25, played together on stage. Some skinheads lost their patience and threw a beer mug on stage. The place exploded in a huge wrestling match...Terry defended the stage and equipment with a microphone stand, Rob got pretty banged up after diving off the mixing desk into the group of skinheads. Peter was kept in the dressing room and out of battle by a combination of the persuasion of Tony Wilson, and his wife, and Paul of section 25 holding him down! 131. 11 Apr 1980: The Factory I, Manchester Notes: The original Factory reopened for a few Friday dates, Joy Division was booked only 10 days ahead and with minimum advertising the band still drew a crowd of 900 people to the club! Due to several incidents the atmosphere wasn't good when Joy Division entered the stage, but Joy Division's set was by most reports nothing less than brilliant so the atmosphere improved considerably during their set: "Rob Gretton came out after Joy Division went off and said 'Joy Division will not be coming back again tonight, and if you bastards throw a bottle at me there definitely will be hell.' So, Pils bottles flew from everywhere at him. Joy Division came back out and the club erupted when they did 'Atrocity Exhibition' as the encore." [Nick Wraith, June 1982] 132. 19 Apr 1980: Ajanta Theatre, Derby Notes: Due to Ian's fragile health Joy Division only jammed with Section 25, the jam being based on the Section 25 single "Girls Don't Count" (FAC 18) which had been produced by Rob Gretton and Ian Curtis. A number of dates that was supposed to follow was cancelled due to Ian's health. 133. 02 May 1980: High Hall, Birmingham University Notes: Joy Division was supported by A Certain Ratio. They had chosen this concert to debut one of their new songs "Ceremony". Just following his vocal on the first and last performance of "Decades", but before the song was finished, Ian stumbled off stage with assistance, and the band played on. He was able, however, to return for an encore: "Digital". This was to be Joy Division's final performance. ########################################### # Bootlegs # ########################################### ---------------------------------------------------------------------- A CHRISTMAS OF JOY (DIVISION) (LP) SC002 1984 Tracks: 1. The cover is a B/W reproduction of "The Scream" by Edvard Munch. The layout resembles a typical Joy Division album cover, but the typography is wrong. The liner notes appear to have been lifted verbatim from pages 6 and 46 of "Joy Division+New Order (Pleasures and Wayward Distractions)" by Brian Edge. The 20 tracks on this cd appear to be monoaural. There is no perceptible separation between the left and right channels. Tracks 1-17 were recorded on 11 Jan 1980 at the Paradiso Club, Amsterdam. The overall sound and performance are definitely better than on "Still", and nearly (but not quite) as good as on "Komakino". Tracks 18-20 were recorded 13 June 1979 at the Russell Club, Manchester. The performance is somewhat more energetic than on tracks 1-17. The sound is rather muddy, although glitch-free. ** ---------------------------------------------------------------------- FROM THE END TO THE BEGINNING (WARSAW) ??? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- FUTURAMA 2 ??? It's a West-German bootleg released November 1984, in mono. Only 50 copies! Later reissued as "Space". ** ---------------------------------------------------------------------- SHADOWPLAY (LP) ??? 1986 Tracks: 1. Exercise One 5. Sound of music 2. Insight 6. 24 hours 3. Excellent sound-quality. Recorded live at The Warehouse in Preston, UK, February 28 1980 (the sleeve says March 28 but that is a mis-print). ** ---------------------------------------------------------------------- SOLITARY DEMANDS (7") CoCo 8202 1982 Tracks: 1. Atmosphere 3. 24 hours 2. Interzone 4. Colony ** Tracks #1-2 are live from Paradiso, Amsterdam 11 January 1980, these are the encore of that concert. Tracks #3-4 are from the second Peel session (SFPS033). Released July 1982. ** ---------------------------------------------------------------------- SORDIDE SENTIMENTAL (7") ??? 1989 Tracks: 1. Dead Souls 2. Atmosphere ** This is a boot of the "Licht Und Blindheit" single. It's easy to spot the difference from the real thing: - The original is silver and black, text only, the boot has a coloured Medusa's head. - The boot hasn't got any number printed on the sleeve like the original. ** ---------------------------------------------------------------------- SPACE (LP) Ultra Disc Records, Bruxelles ??? Tracks: 1. Dead souls 6. Shadowplay 2. Disorder 7. Atrocity exhibition 3. Wilderness 8. Unknown 4. Autosuggestion 9. Unknown 5. In the warehouse B1. Insight A2. Passover B2. New dawn fades A3. Wilderness B3. Transmission A4. Digital B4. Love will tear us apart A5. Day of the lords B5. These days C1. A means to an end D1. The eternal C2. 24 hours D2. Heart and soul C3. Warsaw D3. She's lost control C4. Colony D4. The drawback C5. Interzone ** This is a double-album in clear vinyl. It's a collectors item in limited edition. The sound is ok (could have been better) but the artwork on the record-sleeve is BEAUTIFUL. A1, C3, C4, C5, D1, D2 and D3 were recorded live at the Warehouse in Preston (UK) on February 28.th 1980. D4 was recorded for the _Joy Division_ album in 1978. The rest of the tracks were recorded at their Paradiso-gig on January 11.th 1980. "In the warehouse" is just "Incubation" and "The drawback" is the original name for "All of this for you". ** ---------------------------------------------------------------------- THE IDEAL (LP) Sex 3536 1985 Tracks: 1. This bootleg is an Australian reissue of the "Warsaw" and "The Ideal Beginning" boots. ** ---------------------------------------------------------------------- THE IDEAL BEGINNING (7") PSS 138 Enigma 1981 Tracks: 1. Inside the line 2. Gutz 3. At a later date ** This is a bootleg from "The Warsaw Demo" which the band never released officially. Released April 1981 with the name Warsaw on the sleeve. Also released as a picture disc. ** ---------------------------------------------------------------------- THE IDEAL BEGINNING (12") ??? Anonymous Records 1981 Tracks: 1. Gutz 2. At a later date 3. The kill ** Another bootleg from "The Warsaw Demo". This format was released September 1981 (also as Warsaw). The copy I have has printed "Collector's item" on the sleeve. Joy Division are famous for changing their song-titles, and THIS version of "The kill" is a totally different song than "The kill" off "Still"! ** ---------------------------------------------------------------------- THE SOUND AND THE FURY (LP) ??? 1985 Tracks: _ DISC 1 _ 1. B1 and B5 are from the "Earcom 2: Contradiction" - 12" FAST 9B B3 was recorded on October 11.th 1978 and released on FAC 2. Interzone ** Recorded live at the Electric Ballroom, London, Oct 26 1979. West-German bootleg, released January 1984. Mono. Released as "Glass Is..." in Australia. ** ---------------------------------------------------------------------- WALK AWAY IN SILENCE (LP) Three A/B ??? Tracks: 1. Sound of music 5. Isolation 2. A means to an end 6. Love wil tear us apart 3. Colony 7. Disorder 4. 24 hours 8. Atrocity exhibition ** Live at High Wycombe Town Hall, February 20 1980 ** ---------------------------------------------------------------------- WARSAW (7") ??? 1983 Tracks: 1. Inside the line 2. Gutz 3. At a later date ** Bootleg reissue of "The Ideal Beginning" (PSS 138). ** ---------------------------------------------------------------------- WARSAW (LP) RZM200 RZM Productions Ltd. 1981 Tracks: 1. All of this for you 7. Transmission 2. The leaders of men 8. Living in the ice age 3. They walked in line 9. Interzone 4. Failures (of the modern man) 10. Warsaw 5. Novelty 11. Shadowplay 6. No love lost ** West-German bootleg. The tracks were recorded session (3). Together with the 'original' bootleg LP was an EP with "The First Peel Session". The bonus EP was poor-sounding and some of the LP- versions were too fast ! The LP came in black vinyl but has been reissued in coloured and clear vinyl. The sleeve is made of a hand-folded poster with the motive from "Unknown Pleasures". ** ---------------------------------------------------------------------- WARSAW (CD) ??? 1990 Tracks: 1. All of this for you 2. Leaders of men 3. They walked in line 4. Failures 5. Novelty 6. No love lost 7. Excite one 8. Insight 9. She's lost control 10. Transmission 11. Transmission 12. Living in the ice age 13. Interzone 14. Warsaw 15. Shadowplay ** Tracks #1-6 and #11-15 are the same as the "Warsaw" LP-bootleg, while tracks #7-10 are from "The First Peel Session". Track #7 is mis-spelled, it's"Exercise one". The CD exists in at least two different versions, this one which has the "Unknown Pleasures"-motive on the sleeve and the newer release mentioned below. The sound quality is better on this version though it displays less information and looks very amateurish: The disc for example has a track-listing that includes the correct number of tracks, but non of the titles printed on it has been recorded by Joy Division. And the title (according to the disc) is "Fun Multiplication II", and it is a "For promotion only - Not for sale"-release!!!! This is an Italian bootleg. ** ---------------------------------------------------------------------- WARSAW (CD) 159088 Retropop 1991 Tracks: 1. All of this for you 2. They walked in line 3. Failures 4. Ice age 5. Interzone 6. Warsaw 7. Transmission 8. Shadowplay 9. Leaders of men 10. Novelty 11. No love lost 12. Exercise one 13. Insight 14. She's lost control 15. Transmission 16. You're no good for me ** Tracks #1-11 are from the "Warsaw" LP-bootleg, tracks #12-15 are from the "The First Peel Session" and track 16 is from The Warsaw Demo. On the front it's written JOY DIVISION (in capital letters and with underlining) and (in non-capital letters) the title: warsaw. Both written in red. There's also a picture, on the front of the CD, of a Roman/ ancient Greek stone-carving, portraying a horse-race in old Rome. On the back all 16 songs with their playing times are listed, there's also a small picture of a very thoughtful Ian Curtis, and some info is given too. Unfortunately the given info include some errors, the info goes like this: TRACKS 1-12 UNRELEASED FIRST JOY DIVISION ALBUM, RECORDED 3+4 MARCH, 1978. * WAS RECORDED JULY 18, 1977 WHEN JOY DIVISION WERE CALLED WARSAW As you can see the recording-date given is wrong, the unreleased album was recorded MAY 3+4 1978. Also the track-explanation given is wrong: Only tracks 1-11 are from the unreleased album, like written above. The CD-inlet looks more professional than the CD-inlet of the Italian boot, it includes 4 good photos (one of each member of the band). But unfortunately the disc-quality is less professional! You can easily hear that this CD has been booted off a record in a not too good condition. So if you can chose, avoid this version and go for the Italian bootleg listed above. This is a German bootleg. ** ---------------------------------------------------------------------- WARSAW (CD) ??? Aulica < 1994 Tracks: 1. Gutz 2. At a later date 3. The kill 4. Inside the line 5. You're no good for me 6. All of this for you 7. Leaders of men 8. They walked in line 9. Failures 10. Novelty 11. No love lost 12. Transmission 13. Living in the ice age 14. Interzone 15. Warsaw 16. Shadowplay ** This must be the latest generation of the WARSAW bootleg, the sound-quality is worse than the older editions (see above). This version also includes "The Warsaw Demo". ** ---------------------------------------------------------------------- WARSAW (CD) MPG 74034 Movie Play Gold 1994 Tracks: 1. The drawback 1:42 2. Leaders of men 2:28 3. They walked in line 2:50 4. Failures 2:22 5. Novelty 3:36 6. No love lost 4:34 7. Transmission 4:20 8. Living in the ice age 2:19 9. Interzone 2:02 10. Warsaw 2:06 11. Shadowplay 3:53 12. As you said 2:01 13. Inside the line 2:43 14. Gutz 1:59 15. At a later date 3:14 16. The kill 3:08 17. You're no good for me 2:02 ** Yet another "Warsaw" bootleg, this one is issued under license to Intermusic S.A. and published 1994. Whatever that means this bootleg is "copyrighted 1994 by Movieplay S.A." and it was made in Portugal. The front is a photo of an infant and the words "Warsaw" in black on top and in reverse on the bottom. The first 11 tracks was recorded during session (3) Tracks 13-17 are from "The Warsaw Demo" recorded July 18 1977, while track 12 was recorded in March 1980 and appeared on the "Komakino" flexi. The sound is actually fairly good, and the CD comes with a little inlet displaying info about the band and the recording of the material. The info is clarly typed off page 22 in Mark Johnson's book "An Ideal For Living" ** ---------------------------------------------------------------------- WARSAW AT THE BEGINNING (12") ??? Tracks: 1. Inside the line 3. At a later date 2. Gutz 4. The kill 5. You're no good for me ** The songs from "The Warsaw Demo", recorded session (1). ** ---------------------------------------------------------------------- WARSAW DEMO (7" / CDS) SCONC 016 Stampa Alternativa 1990 Tracks: 1. Inside the line 4. The kill 2. Gutz 5. You're no good for me 3. At a later date ** The songs are from "The Warsaw Demo", recorded session (1). The single came with the Italian book "From The Center Of The City", it must be played on 33RPM. ** ---------------------------------------------------------------------- YOU'RE NO GOOD FOR ME (LP) ??? 1987 Tracks: ??? ** 8 tracks live from Town Hall, High Wycombe, February 20 1980. 3 songs from a sound-check, and "You're no good for me" recorded session (1). ** ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ########################################### # Cover versions # ########################################### CEREMONY Galaxie 500; EP: "Blue Thunder", Rough Trade Records 1990. It's rather gothic in it's approach. The cover is black and white with what looks like an old-fashioned mic (blurred) on the front and a picture of Ian on the back. It came out on Mere Mortal Prod. Extra special thanks to Fernando Lopez-de-Victoria (fl12@cornell.edu) for lots of info/comments Ruud Menken (r.p.menken@research.ptt.nl) for adding a great number of bootlegs and release-dates to the discography. Vidar Ringstroem (vidarr@mack.nbr.no) for bootleg info and for saving me a great deal of work by returning this file to me after my disk had crashed! Henry Weld (weld_h@maths.su.oz.au) for sending a huge amount of JD bootleg-info from Harry Butler's JD-fanzine. I've adapted Harry Butler's "recording session"-design which I think make the discography easier to read. Finally, extra extra special thanx to: JOY DIVISION, for creating some everlasting moments. "Walk ... in silence. Don't walk away ... in silence. See the danger ... always danger. Endless talking ... life rebuilding. Don't walk away!"
