COIL

Coil is John Balance and Peter "Sleazy" Christopherson, who started to officially work as Coil on May 11, 1983, after working together as members of Psychic TV (Balance doing so under his real name, Geoff Rushton) and Zos Kia. Stephen Thrower was also a semi-regular member, but no longer works with them. Producer Danny Hyde is a regular fixture on later Coil releases. Coil releases have also featured many guest artists, such as Marc Almond, Gavin Friday, and Annie Anxiety.

        Notes:
From the liner notes: "This release is not the follow-up to HORSE
ROTORVATOR... but a completely seperate package - a stopgap and a
breathing space - the space between two twins. Presented here are
thoroughbreds that escaped the Horse Rotorvator - discarded shards,
distortions, disappointments, scrambled and disassembled stages.
Remnants of what once was. This record is a chance for us to
release some otherwise placeless pieces of music."

The initial vinyl release (LOCI 1) took 3 different forms:
        (1) 55 copies in deluxe box with free single THE WHEEL (LOCI 2, see
            below) and art works.
        (2) 900 copies on coloured vinyl (some red, some clear), some copies
including free single THE WHEEL (LOCI 2, below)
        (3) "regular" release on black vinyl.

The vinyl is etched with "ME AND MY SHADOW" (side A) and "UNDERNEATH
ALL THAT EVER WAS" (side B).

The 1990 vinyl re-release (NORMAL 77) had slightly different
packaging and included the second version of THE WHEEL single
        (listed below).

The initial CD release (LOCI CD1) was limited to 1000 numbered
        copies.

OTHER MISC. INFORMATION & QUESTIONS

John Balance appears on the following recordings by Current 93 - LASHTAL 12" (1983), MENSTRUAL NIGHT LP (1985), DAWN LP (1986), THUNDER PERFECT MIND LP (1991), and LUCIFER OVER LONDON EP (1994) - and perhaps others.

Steven Thrower was a member of the band Possession, who released at least one album - THE THIN, WHITE ARMS, OBTUSELY ANGLED AT THE ELBOW, METHODICALLY DIPPING AND EMERGING (1984, A-Mission Records, UK) - and appeared on several compilation LP's.

Coil recorded a cassette in collaboration with The New Blockaders and Vortex Campaign that I have very little information about. All I know is that the initial release was supposed a limited edition of 50 packaged in a ripped cloth bag, that it was later re-released by RRRecords, and that Coil appears on two tracks but isn't recognizable - like most New Blockaders stuff, it's extremely noisy. Can anyone else shed some light on this one?

Coil is supposedly working on a soundtrack to the graphic novel UNDERGROUND, to be released by Dark Horse Comics.

Coil have signed to Nothing, a subsiduary of Interscope Records in the US that is owned by Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails. Although the initial Coil release on Nothing will be their next album, Reznor has stated that he would like to re-release Coil's back catalog at some point.

The tentative title for their next album proper is INTERNATIONAL DARK SKIES. It will include guest appearances by William Burroughs, Terence McKenna, Tim Simenon, Mark Almond, and Trent Reznor (playing John Lennon's Mellotron).
